多年生草本，根和根状茎极发达，部分种类含甘草甜素 (Glycyrrhizin)。茎直立，多分枝。基部常木质，全体被鳞片状腺点或刺状腺体。叶为奇数羽状复叶；托叶2枚，分离，早落或宿存；小叶 (3) 5-17枚，全缘或具刺毛状的细齿。总状花序腋生；苞片早落；花萼钟状或筒状，膨胀或否，基部偏斜，萼齿5枚，上部的2齿部分连合；花冠白色、黄色、紫色、紫红色、旗瓣具短爪，翼瓣短于旗瓣，龙骨瓣连合；雄蕊 (9+1) 二体，花丝长短交错，花药2型，药室顶端连合；子房1室，无柄；含2-10个胚珠。荚果圆形，卵圆形、矩圆形至线形，少有念珠状，直或弯曲呈镰刀状至环状，扁或膨胀，被鳞片状腺点、刺毛状腺体、瘤状突起或硬刺，极少光滑，不裂或成熟后开裂。种子肾形。
全属约20种，分布遍全球各大洲，以欧亚大陆为多，又以亚洲中部的分布最为集中。我国有8种，主要分布于黄河流域以北各省区，个别种见于云南西北部。
属名模式：洋甘草 Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn.
E. A. Kruganova 的甘草属系统是迄今较好的，在本分册中采用。三小叶的属Meristotropis Fisch. et Mey. 我国不产，不作讨论，唯其中 M. paucifoliolata (Hance) Krug. 非三小叶，产于我国青海及新疆塔里木河下游，已被合并于 Glycyrrhiza inflata Batal.
甘草 G. uralensis Fisch. 最早记载于公元一、二世纪，在《神农本草经》中列为上品。陶宏景在《名医别录》中称甘草为国老，意即甘草为众药之主，经方少有不用者。西欧“植物学之父”提奥弗拉斯特在《植物的研究》一书中亦有甜根植物（G. glabra Linn.）的记载，并指出在民间入药治气喘、咳嗽等症。由此可知，中外历代对甘草的研究和利用十分重视，尤其是在本草方面，积累了丰富的材料。近代，对甘草的生药、药理及化学成分做了详尽的研究，并且更广泛地应用于中、西医药上。经过分析，甘草属部分种类的根和根茎含甘草甜素（glycyrrhizin) 、甘草黄甙（liquiritoside) 、甘草次酸（glycyrrhetic acid 等多种成分，有解毒、消炎、祛痰镇咳之效，可治疗胃及十二指肠溃疡、肝炎、咽喉红肿、咳嗽、痈节肿毒等症。此外甘草还可应用于食品工业和烟草工业。
