Abstract Central south China is the origin of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) although loquats are widely grown in subtropical regions including the southern coastal area of Korean peninsula at the moment. Loquat is mainly used as fresh fruit between May and July. Yet, there are not many available records or information on the use of loquat leaves. This study was to evaluate their antioxidant activities of 4 loquat cultivars such as ''Mihwang'', ''Mogi'', ''Tanaka'' and ''Nagasakiwase'', by using ethanol and hot water as solvents. The 80% ethanol solvent showed better ability in the extraction of flavonoid content and phenolic compound from loquat leaves. High amount of the phenolic compounds was found in ''Nagasakiwase'' (28.0%) by 80% ethanol solvent, while ''Mihwang'' contained 24.7% by hot water solvent. Flavonoids contents of ''Mihwang'' were 17.7% by 80% ethanol solvent and 9.2% by hot water solvent. ''Mihwang'' showed the highest antioxidant activity (68.5%) in 80% ethanol extract while ''Mogi'' showed 62.9% antioxidant activity in hot water extract. ABTS reduction capability of ''Mihwang'' was highest (65.9%) in 80% ethanol extract and that of ''Mogi'' was 54.8% in hot water extract. A ratio of flavonoid content compared to phenolic compound of 80% ethanol extracts of ''Mihwang'' was highest as compared to the other cultivars. The high antioxidant activity of ''Mihwang'' leaf extracts indicated that it could be exploited as ingredients in developing a potential antioxidant supplement in various functional foods.
