Abstract Bacteria are among the most common causes ofsevere diseases in both plants and animals. Salmonella spp. hasdeleterious effects and is the cause of various transmittablediseases. Because of strains resistivity, side effects and highprices of synthetic antibiotics, it has become essential to exploresafe and economical natural sources of antibiotics. In thisstudy, growth inhibitory effects of natural antibiotics presentin crude extracts of Galla rhois, Thujae semen, Paeonia japonica, and Armeniacae semen were investigated both in vivoand iv vitro. Ethanol extracts of the above-mentioned plantswere prepared and tested against seven serovars of Salmonellaand Escherichia coli by disc diffusion method. In addition, theantibacterial effects of the plant extracts were determined invivo using ducks as model animals. Reverse transcription-polymerasechain reaction was performed using blood and fecalsamples of control, infected, and treated groups of the ducksto determine the gene expression levels of the bacteria. Ourresults confirmed that the Galla rhois ethanol extract had thehighest antibacterial activity among the plant extracts whenthey were used individually. However, the Galla rhois, Thujaesemen, and P. japonica ethanol extracts showed strongerantibacterial effects against all the bacterial species used whenthe extracts were combined at a ratio of 3:3:2, respectively.
