Qi Yaodong is a standing council member of the China Wild Plant Conservation Association and Secretary-General of its Standards Committee; Vice Chair of the Pharmacy History Committee of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association; a member of the Expert Advisory Committee on Wild Plant Protection and the Technical Committee on Wild Plant Standardization of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the IUCN Species Survival Commission and the Committee on Medicinal Plants and Plant Drugs; a council member of the Belt and Road and Lusophone Countries Natural Medicine Innovation Alliance (Macao); a member of the Chinese Medicinal Resources Committee of the China Association of Chinese Medicine and the testing and certification committee of the China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and an editorial board member of Chinese Journal of Modern Chinese Medicine and Biological Resources.

Research covers surveys, taxonomy, identification and conservation biology of medicinal plant resources. Qi Yaodong has led three projects, including an NSFC General Program project and a national foreign-expert project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and taken part in more than ten projects of the CAMS Innovation Program, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and key programmes of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Working with more than ten companies, Qi Yaodong has carried out resource surveys and cultivation-standard research on major medicinal materials and issued more than 200 botanical identification reports submitted to Chinese drug regulators, the US FDA and the Australian TGA. Qi Yaodong has published 70 papers (35 in SCI journals) and contributed to seven monographs, including the China Plant Red Data Book of Medicinal Plants (associate editor) and Medicinal Flora of China.
